Még szabadot jelezi neki a bejárati jelző Taron, de ez már nem ismétlődik meg többet. Az ütemes menetrenddel elég sokat nyert az utazóközönség (bár érthetetlen módon 11 órakor van egy kétórás lyuk a menetrendben), de sajnos a kezdetben, csúcsidőben jellemző duplauzsgyis vonatok már csak szerelvénymenetek helyett fordulnak elő. Jelentősen csökkent Nógrádban a mobilitás, Salgótarján ipara méginkább leépült, és eközben a közút pozíciói is javultak: svájcifrankból vett Ignisek lepték el a lassan 2*2-sávossá váló 21-es utat, de még a Volán is új, közvetlen budapesti járatokra kapott engedélyt. A szomszéddal ugyan csökkent a teherszállításunk mértéke, tranzitban mégis lenne fejlesztési potenciál, de nagyon sok hiányzik hozzá: gyakorlatilag a szlovák észak-déli tengely teljes átépítése. Villamosítani kell a 170-es vonalat , aminek nagy akadályát képezi a 4700 méteres nagyalagút, ahol a piliscsabaihoz hasonlóan le kellene süllyeszteni a pályát, hogy meglegyen a villamos űrszelvény. Ezután már csak a Zólyom-Fülek vonal villamosítása van hátra, és indulhatnak is Lengyelországból a vonatok délre, sok kamiont kiváltva. A villamosítással elérhető lenne a közvetlen budapesti vonat legalább a csúcsidőben - ilyenkor a gödöllői S-Bahnok is Hatvanig járnak, a két viszonylat összeköthető lenne. Ez azonban nagyon távolinak és valószerűtlennek tűnik, pedig a 81-es vonalat könnyű lenne fejleszteni: a mostani pályaállapotok nem rosszak, így van egy erős utazóközönsége, végig kétvágányú az alépítmény, hiszen korábban kétvágányú volt (ennek nyomát őrzi a két, terepasztalhoz illően egyszerű állomás, Tar és Szurdokpüspöki is: tulajdonképpen a második vágány megmaradt szakaszai ezek, így lehettek olcsón hosszúak - ha megfelelő lenne a biztosítottságuk, akár repülőkereszteket is le lehetne bonyolítani). Itt is menetrendhez kellene fejleszteni: durva, hogy a keresztek a nem biztosított, helyszíni váltóállítású Zagyvapálfalvára adódnak, miközben a korábbi feladatai miatt D55-tel szerelt Salgótarján-Külsőn nincs vonattalálkozás. Ha föl lehetne 80-ra emeleni a pályasebességet, akkor a keresztek helyén második vágánnyal repülőkereszteket lehetne megvalósítani, mint a 2-esen Terranovánál. Ehhez azonban több utas kellene, ami elsősorban nem a vasúton, hanem a vidék gazdaságán múlik.
